Hull History Centre

The Hull History Centre is an archive and local studies library that houses the combined collections of both the Hull City Council and Hull University archives and local studies resources. The materials have been acquired by donation, deposit and purchase, since the first days of the University and its initial establishment as Hull University College in 1928.

Hull University Archives is now located at New Hull History Centre and has already welcomed more than 50,000 visitors since it opened on the 25th January 2010. The new building has 13 linear km of atmospherically controlled storage space to house thousands of rare and historically resources.

This collaboration between Hull City Council, Hull University, and the Heritage Lottery Fund made Hull the first city in the UK to unite local authority and university collections under one roof. There are now over 120 large and over 300 small collections, amounting to hundreds of thousands of documents and files, dating from the late 11th century to almost the present day. The Hull History Centre brings together collections of local, regional and national importance relating to the city of Hull and the surrounding areas, Hull’s maritime history, political figures and pressure groups, and prominent figures in literature and drama.
