State Tretyakov Gallery
This spectacular museum is is one of the largest museums in the world. Located in Moscow, it bears name of its founder – local merchant and textile manufacturer Pavel Tretyakov. The gallery’s history starts in 1856 when Pavel Tretyakov bought several works by Russian artists with the aim of creating a collection and became famous from the minute it was opened to the public in 1870. The gallery displays Russian fine arts of X -XX centuries. Offering 62 rooms and 130,000 works icons, paintings, graphics and sculpture, State Tretyakov Gallery is considered as a must-see destination for all visitors to Moscow.
Built in 1902–04, the gallery building was designed by the painter Viktor Vasnetsov in a peculiar Russian fairy-tale style. The gallery is situated on two territories, separated from each other by several city districts. Spanning the entire history of Russian art, the collection contains more than 130,000 exhibits, ranging from Theotokos of Vladimir and Andrei Rublev’s Trinity to the monumental Composition VII by Wassily Kandinsky. The Tretyakov gives you the chance to discover the rich tradition from which these great artists sprang onto the world stage.
By the end of the 20th century the State Tretyakov Gallery became one of the world richest treasuries of Russian fine art. The Gallery treasures priceless collection of old Russian icons, paintings, sculptures and graphics of the 18th-20th centuries. It gives the opportunity to represent the whole history of Russian art from the ancient period to our contemporaries. The latest part of the collection, dating from 1950 – 1990, opened on 25th May 2000. Opening hours: Daily – 10:00 to 19:00, except Mondays.
