The Museum of Memory and Tolerance

This museum provides a space of study within a democratic and multicultural frame for the development of future generations. Situated in Mexico City, the museum integrates the remembrance of genocides provoked by racial discrimination (Memory) and the unforgiving legacy that this leaves us with, and must lead us to, respect of others and coexistence in diversity (Tolerance).

Designed by Legorreta + Legorreta Architects, the Museum is constructed using a mixture of reinforced concrete and steel in a seven level structure (three of permanent exhibit + four complimentary). The visitors’ experience beings in the main atrium, where two large open arms embrace the “floating” children’s memorial, which was created in collaboration with Dutch artist Jan Hendrix. The sculpture pays homage to the two million children exterminated in genocides, and a cascade of 20000 ‘tears’ symbolize victims – one tear for every 100 children killed.

This Memorial has two interrelated intentions: remembering approximately two million children who have been exterminated in genocides, and educating our children to foster future coexistence among all people. The chief of government Marcelo Ebrard inaugurated the museum of Memory and Tolerance in Mexico City in Oct 2010. For more additional information please click here.
