Orange County Great Park

Comprises just 28% of the 4,682 total acres that made up the old MCAS El Toro base, the Orange County Great Park the first great metropolitan park of the 21st Century. Located between Los Angeles and San Diego, the park is so popular with the exciting Balloon Park, where you get to take a trip in a hot air balloon around the city. The park opened its first attraction, a balloon ride that takes visitors to 150 m for a panoramic view of the construction of the park as well as views of the county, on July 14, 2007. Thus, the park more or less caters to the ones who like their share of cultural intake and to those who are up for an adventure at any given time.

Situated in Irvine, California, the Orange County Great Park is the official name of a plan for the public, non-aviation reuse of the decommissioned Marine Corps Air Station El Toro. U.S. military aerial demonstration and fly over, police aircraft, vintage airplanes, helicopters, and aerial show were dramatic and got lots of attention.

The project created by landscape architect and coke bottle glasses enthusiast Ken Smith was awarded by the American Institute of Architects in the urban design category. Current centerpieces for the Orange Country Great Park are the vintage carousel and the huge helium balloon ride. When completed, the 1,400 acre park should include an arboretum, a sports park, amphitheater, aviation museum and several cultural and community centers.
