An excellent experience that you cannot miss

This is one of the main points of interests when visiting Colombia. No other museum in Latin America holds a collection of gold as vast as the Museo del Oro or Museum of Gold in Bogota. With a permanent extraordinary collection of more than 55,000 ornaments, tools and art pieces made of gold by all the native pre-Hispanic cultures, this is one of the most representative museums in South America.

This amazing selection of its pre-Hispanic gold work collection is the biggest in the world. The collection includes bracelets, earrings, necklaces, breast plates, masks, figurines and rings created from 500 D.C. until the Spanish arrived in the sixteenth century and is displayed in a well-guarded fortress-like room on the top floor.  Should you ever be in Bogota, this museum is worth a visit!

The museum is divided in 4 separate floors, making a visit a very organized and enjoyable experience. On the first floor is the museum’s main entrance, the shop and a restaurant, The Gold Museum Restaurant and Café. The second floor displays the main collection: a voyage through the history and customs of the tribes that lived in the center, south and north of Colombia. The third and fourth floors house temporary exhibitions. There are bilingual descriptions of almost all exhibits. Opening hours: Tuesday-Saturday 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sunday, holidays 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Closed Monday (including public holidays). Admission: Adults $1.70; children, indigenous and adults over 60 years old free. Free admission for all on Sunday.
